Mira Resnik, visual artist

Born and based in Kamnik, Mira Resnik graduated in 1978 from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology, Ljubljana, with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. From 1978 to 2010 she worked in chemistry laboratories of various companies, mostly as Quality Control Department head.

She took up painting in 1998, initially as a trainee with various academic painters. In 2010 she was accepted to the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (ALUO), Ljubljana, where she graduated in 2013 under the mentorship of Prof Marjan Gumilar and Dr Jure Mikuž. Mira then continued her studies at the Academy and in 2018 received her master’s degree in painting, graduating under the mentorship of Prof Dr Uršula Berlot Pompe and Prof Bojan Gorenc.

Currently, Mira is a member of the Ljubljana Fine Artists Society, the Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Society and the Mengeš Fine Arts Society. She has been exhibiting since 2004 and has so far had 18 solo exhibitions and participated in over 50 group exhibitions.

Mira’s artistic interest lies in interior and exterior spaces that flow into each other in relation to her intimate reflections on life, as well as on the universal human issues and problems of contemporary society. She believes that every human being has two pairs of eyes. The first pair are our outer eyes that enable us to observe the world around us, and the second pair are our inner eyes, which see our inner world. Her visual art paints images seen by her inner eyes, which however are inseparable from the images perceived by her outer eyes.

Her go-to medium for translating ideas into visual form is acrylic on canvas, whereby she uses a combination of materials, colors and media (video, photography) in conjunction with painting and sculpture techniques and readymades. In recent years, her work has featured cut-out openings filled with hand-woven netting, allowing a view into the space behind the canvas. In fact, such grids have been an ongoing theme of her work from the very beginning.
